Childhood Trauma
Nadine Burke Harris goes on and explains to us how childhood trauma affects overall health in your life. She explains how childhood stress and trauma can lead to the brain not being able to develop, and how in some severe cases childhood trauma can cause heart disease and lung cancer. Holden doesn't necessarily have lung cancer or a disease but she explains how it can also cause change in behavior and interaction with life. When Holden was only 13 years old he experienced the loss of his brother, Allie. Holden was impacted tremendously and ever since the loss he began to go down hill. Holden was expelled from his school showing how his brain was to focused on something else. Another thing she said that associated with Holden was high risk behavior. Holden is known to engage in substance abuse, either in the form of cigarettes or alcohol. For example whenever he got drunk to the point where he couldn't even see, after talking to Carl. Holden Caufield's past is filled with stressful events from the loss of his brother to potentiol sexual abuse or trauma. Holden is trying to life a normal life like any american would want to, but his past haunts his and makes it difficult for him. Like Nadine mentioned the actions of someone may have been caused from some childhood trauma we don't even imagine that is why she looks beyond a person, just like we were able to examine Holden's life and how much his childhood affected him, causing him to be the person he is now.
